Special Concrete Masonry Unit (CMU) Types
Scored
Scored CMUs are similar in shape to
plain CMUs, but have one or more vertical scores molded into the face to
create attractive patterns. Only two parts of the mold are changed to
create this appearance.
Split face
Split face CMUs are solid or hollow
units that are molded "Siamese style" and split lengthwise or
crosswise by a guillotine-like machine. The CMUs are split after coming
out of the kiln and before cubing. Split face CMUs have an attractive,
natural rough, stone-like texture. Different aggregates and pigments
provide a myriad of appearances.
Ribbed and fluted
Ribbed and fluted CMUs are produced by
using special molds. Split ribbed CMUs are produced by passing the
ribbed CMUs through the same splitter used for split face block. The
process is the same, only the mold is changed. The texture of the split
face is natural and rugged, separated by molded grooves or scores.
Ground face
Ground face units are produced by
grinding 1/16 to 1/8 inch (1 to 3 mm) from the face of normal CMUs. The
result is a smooth surface that displays the various colors and sizes of
aggregate particles. By using different aggregate sizes, types, and
colors, and various cement colors, a wide variety of effects can be
created. Clear sealers or glazes are frequently used to enhance the
appearance. Concrete CMUs are sometimes sandblasted to create another
appearance.
Slump
Slumped or overhanging CMUs are created
by using mixes slightly wetter than normal and applying pressure to the
top of the unit. This allows the CMU to bulge or deform slightly.
Paving stone
High strength interlocking paving
stones can be made with different patterns and thickness. Uses range
from walkways to roads and heavy industrial applications.
