Dust Suppression Systems
by Robert Ober, Operations Manager
Besser, San Antonio, Texas

Besser provides a range of dust control and dust suppression systems, from simple bag houses to central vacuum systems. These items, when sized and installed properly, will add profits to your bottom line.

Ask most producers about their dust control systems and the common response is "adequate—when it works." As with all plant equipment, performance of routine maintenance on dust control systems is crucial to consistent and effective operation.

A DCS-260 scavenger dust collector mounted above the batch mixer helps eliminate airborne pollutants in the plant.

Many variables affect the life span of fabric socks used in bag house dust collectors. Humidity can cause powders to plug material pores and the shaker motor action causes deterioration of the sock. When bag houses on silo tops are used it is important to meet local, state, and federal laws concerning airborne pollution (escaping cement or fly ash dust). As a general rule, change socks every 12 months. Waiting too long to change them is an invitation for attracting the attention of neighbors or the authorities.

Controlling dust is an opportunity to save money. Travel to any number of production facilities on any given day, however, and you may need a face mask to keep from inhaling their profits. It is no exaggeration to say that up to 3% of some producer’s cement expense could be put into product, rather than being released into the air where it eventually forms a useless blanket over the plant, yard and neighboring areas.

The DCS-260 and DCS60-7000 are proven dust collection systems.

Besser offers central vacuum systems designed to make dust suppression easier to manage. The central vacuum collects the cement and returns it to where it was originally stored. Whether you have a simple single silo, single weigh hopper (yes, weigh hoppers need passive collectors), or single or multiple mixers throughout a large production facility, the material handling professionals at Besser will assist you in keeping the most expensive ingredient you use – cement – from escaping.

Besser also designs and builds dry bagging facilities - one of the most challenging dust control situations in the cement based material handling industry. Additionally, Besser is one of the largest suppliers of cement and lime terminals in the United States. We supply unique dust suppression systems for rail and truck terminals that are engineered specifically for massive storage plants. This same engineering expertise, relating to dust suppression systems, is being applied to concrete products production facilities.

This cement terminal benefits from a Besser supplied dust collection system.

Take a look outside your facility. If your operation is dusty or if your batch plant powder storage is polluting the area, call the San Antonio manufacturing location at 800.330.5590 or 210.333.1111 or your local Besser representative to arrange for a consultation.
